When Salford born musician Ewan Maccoll wrote "Dirty Old Town" he included the line "Dream a dream by the old canal". This project rediscovers Salford's hidden gem of a canal enabling it to wake from its slumber and be a source of recreation, play, heritage and community.

Hidden Canal 2026

Thanks to funding from the Whose Art Whose Culture Salford CVS programme, Walk the Plank and the Mcr, Bolton & Bury Canal Society are working together to capture oral histories, memories and recollections about the Canal (most of which is hidden in Salford - aside from Middlewood Locks and near Agecroft) and raise the profile of the Canal, the Hidden Canal sound walk project and Middlewood Locks Fest

As part of this, we're holding some out and about sessions with our speaking and listening pod near to where the Canal originally was (and still is: it's just been filled in): everyone is invited to come along - particularly people who remember the Canal or have heard stories about it. David, a sound artist, will interview and capture people's voices at these sessions before turning what they say into short podcast like episodes which will be shared online and at other events throughout Salford's Centenary year

Listen to an example from St Philips Primary here

When finished, the new sound pieces will be shared on our websites and also heard at events during Salford's Centenary Year www.salford100.org.uk/ including Middlewood Locks Fest on Saturday 27 June

Hidden Canal

Inspired by the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal we paired Salford / Greater Manchester artists with European artists to create a Sound Walk along the route of the old canal. The canal begins at the River Irwell at Middlewood Locks and then disappears from sight until near Agecroft Cemetery.

5 artists from Greater Manchester and 5 artists from Europe worked on the Sound Walk and it started at the end of February 2024 with an international residency at Cobden Works. The artists involved were:
